One of the most interesting parts of Estonian nature are big beautiful bog areas. The like that have been destroyed in continental Europe. In Estonia 20% of area are bogs. Snowshoeing is the best way to see the unapproachable, beautiful and unspoiled Estonian nature.
Snowshoes were used already hundreds of years ago to walk on wetlands. Bog walk starts with regular hike on the woods. When approaching higher bog areas we clip on snowshoes carried with us. Using snowshoes we can safely and easily visit damper and softer parts of the bogs. Bog walk can last anywhere from 2 hour short hike to 2 days tour. Length of the tour is easily adjustable to the likes of the group.
Location
Bogwalks can be made in different parts of Estonia. While in Tallinn it is wise to visit West-Estonian bogs or Kõrvemaa area. West-Estonian bog areas are massive and relatively visitor-free. Also if you are interested in observing birds, Western-Estonian bog areas situated not far from the sea are better place. Snowshoeing in autumn bogs focuses on enjoying the nature and observing wildlife.
Time
Bog walks are available throughout the year. Different seasons offer different emotions.
Autumn (September- November) is the best time to visit wetlands and woods. Beautiful nature and no insects. You might find berries. Daylight lasts till 8-9pm.
Winter (December-Feb ) is quite interesting depending on the winter. Even if there is not too much snow, bog makes you feel like walking in really deep snow.
Spring (March-May) – nature is waking up. The main thing to observe are arriving birds (April-May).
Summer (June-August) – hot, lot of insects, but small lakes are warm and inviting.
